19 June 2009 Attorney‑General, Robert McClelland, today congratulated the work of community forums in promoting an accepting, multicultural society in a speech to the 2009 Diversity of Muslim Women’s Conference. “This event is particularly important to showcase the achievements of Australian Muslim women and I applaud all the fine achievements that have been acknowledged here today,” Mr McClelland said. The Australian Government opposes intolerance in all its forms and is committed to building Australia as an inclusive and cohesive society. Governments cannot, however, do this alone. We need to work closely with Australian communities to promote awareness, understanding and acceptance. The Conference, organised by the community-based Al Zahra Muslim Women’s Association, recognised the role of Australian Muslim women and the rich contribution they make to society. “Community forums such as this are an excellent opportunity to showcase our rich multicultural society and to develop understanding and respect for our differences.” “It also demonstrates how all Australians, regardless of their background or origin, can make a valuable contribution to our country.” Mr McClelland congratulated Mrs Zeinab Beydoun on being awarded the Local Muslim Woman of the Year for her ongoing contribution to education and volunteering within her local community. “Mrs Beydoun’s valuable contribution makes her a worthy recipient of this award. She is a great role model who will improve the understanding of Islam in our community.” Media Contact: Adam Siddique 0407 473 630 |
